At Tiverton, we provide a purposeful transition process that supports pupil’s individual needs in preparation for moving to a new class, Key stage and new school. Our PSHE curriculum has a strand that focuses on change and loss, and this is something we cover in the spring and summer terms to prepare our pupils for transition.

Within school, staff meet with class teachers to share information regarding pupils. This is an opportunity for staff to share their progress and attainment, behaviour, communication, outside agency involvement (physio/OT etc.) and general need. This information is also updated and included in individual pupil passports which are passed on to new classes to keep.

When moving class or key stage, pupils are prepared before an initial visit to their new class. Pupils are provided with a picture and symbol booklet, showing their new classroom, staff, and, if moving key stage, their corridor (colour coded). Pupils then have the opportunity to spend time in their new class, meeting their peers and staff. Activities are provided as a whole class, small group and one to one basis. Pupils have also benefited from a transition video, showing them their new classroom and staff. The video and booklet are then a physical reminder of which class pupils will be moving too, that can be looked at any time, when needed and hopefully reduce any anxieties around the change.  

When moving to secondary school, the same information is shared regarding pupils. In addition, our pupils attend three morning transition sessions at their secondary school, one of which pupils stay for lunch. Pupils are accompanied by staff from Tiverton. This allows Secondary schools to provide a smooth and have everything in place to welcome our pupils in September.
