Subject: Home to School Travel Assistance arrangement September 2020
We are aware that you will be anxious to know the travel arrangements that the LA will put in place to enable your child to safely return to school in September 2020.
I am writing to assure you that we are doing all we can to secure sufficient vehicle capacity to meet anticipated Government guidance on home to school transport, which we are expecting to be published shortly.
At this point in time, we know that children will not be required to wear face coverings on transport provided by the Local Authority directly. However, children over the age of 11 will be required to wear face coverings on public transport (scheduled bus routes), unless they meet the exemptions which include a range of special educational needs and disabilities.
We appreciate that many of you will be understandably anxious about your child’s safety as we return to school. All schools have made very robust arrangements to ensure that stringent hygiene measures are in place and that staff are trained in implementing the health and safety plans. You should therefore be assured that your school has done all that it reasonably can, to welcome your child back to school safely.
However, it is important that children do travel to and from school with minimum risk. This means avoiding the use of public transport if at all possible. If you are concerned about the safety of your child travelling for example on a Council minibus and instead want to transport your child yourself, the Council will welcome that decision because it will help relieve some of the demand pressures we anticipate and assist in reducing the current very low risk of transmission further. In return we will reimburse your costs at a rate of 45p per mile.
